First Time Homebuyers $8,000 Tax Credit On February 17th, 2009, the President signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. One of the major provisions of this act is the $8,000 tax credit for first time homebuyers. The act provides a tax credit of 10% to qualified first time homebuyers, up to $8,000, on homes purchased and closed before December 1st, 2009. If a person buys a home for $70,000 they would be eligible for $7,000, however, if they buy a home for $90,000 the eligibility would not exceed $8,000. A person is considered a first time homebuyer if he/she has not had any ownership interest in a home in the three years previous to the day of the 2009 purchase.
